Chief Medical Advisor, British Horseracing Authority UK

Dr Jerry Hill MBE, Chief Medical Adviser, British Horseracing Authority UK

Dr Jerry Hill started working in horse racing in 2000 alongside his roles in Primary and Pre-Hospital Care. With the addition of Club Football to his portfolio he retrained in Sports and Exercise Medicine in the run up to the London 2012 Olympics before taking up full time work as a Sports Physician.

Initially combining posts in international Women’s Football at the FA with the Chief Medical Adviser role at the BHA, the demands of COVID-19 meant racing required a full-time adviser late in 2020.

Following racing’s suspension on 18th March 2020, Dr Hill worked with colleagues across racing, fellow medical advisers and professionals, to develop safe and robust protocols for the resumption of a £4.1 billion industry.

The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) invited him to join a group of fellow Sports Chief Medical Officers and Public Health England to agree guidance for the resumption of elite sports in the UK in June 2020.

Dr Hill’s role in the response to the COVID-19 pandemic is part of an extensive programme of work on medical provision in British racing. This has included: enhancements to medical requirements of British racecourses; expansion of physiotherapy provision to all British race meetings; and facilitating academic research into jockey nutrition, mental health and concussion protocols.

He was one of the authors of the UK Government’s The UK Concussion Guidelines for Non-Elite (Grassroots) Sport published in the spring of 2023.

Building on relationships forged during COVID Jerry is working as an independent with UKGov on the Event Healthcare Standard and CQC work streams which were part of the outputs from the Manchester Arena Inquiry.
