Security Industry Authority – Setting Standards in Private Security

08 Mar 2022
The Event Foundry

Who is the SIA?
Established under the terms of the Private Security Industry Act 2001, the Security Industry Authority (SIA) are responsible for regulating certain activities within the private security industry across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

The primary function of the Security Industry Authority (SIA) is to raise standards in the private security industry and protect the public.

What is the Approved Contractor Scheme?
The SIA is responsible for developing, delivering, and administering the Approved Contractor Scheme (ACS). The ACS ensures that a business is fit and proper (which includes criminality checks) and has been assessed as meeting the specified quality standards. Businesses may apply on a voluntary basis to become approved contractors and be assessed against a range of criteria.

If successful, we approve the security business, and the business may then market itself as being part of the ACS. The business is then assessed annually to verify its performance against the ACS framework, which includes its service delivery. The ACS has driven significant change in the UK’s private security industry, increasing the standards of businesses and setting the benchmark for quality.

Benefits of using an approved contractor?
Approval to the ACS provides purchasers of private security services with independent proof of a contractor’s commitment to quality. There are many benefits of using an approved contractor, we cover these in our Regulators Guide to Buying Private Security.
